Loved this piece. Didn’t expect (but appreciated) the Tár reference. NEED to hear about the Misogi challenge. As in, how did it go and why on earth did you pick that particular challenge this year.
My favorite of yours so far! Truly. And dragons, dude. I wish I could be as excited about dragons as I was when I was a wee lad. My fascination with the strange and magical will persist forever, but it’s not nearly as potent as it once was. This is a great reminder to be unashamed in what excites you.
I was awaiting a quiet moment to catch up on my reading - outside on the 'porch' with a cup of green tea. Today, after my walk, was the day. Had NO idea the nostalgia this piece would generate.
With NO idea where this was going - (and maybe a little bit nervous :) I have no words for how viscerally this landed....
...AND, I am completely in love with this year's theme! ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
This mom will add that it is not so much that you were easy to buy gifts for (because yes, sports always landed - BUT oh the stress of potentially getting it wrong! ;), but the FUN it was to share your childhood with you. (IMAGINE all this intentionality and passion in a 3-, 5-, 7- (whatever age) year-old.) Puzzles and games too! Can't forget puzzles and games!
Oh! This was just perfect Grif! CHEERS to an amazing 31!
Also Ricky Davis moment #1 is a perfect clown moment. You can absolutely see the child in him being like "nah I'm actually the greatest dunker of all time" with his second-attempt, despite totally biffing one just before. I might even save that as a future metaphor for any sports-inclined students. Is this a super well-known moment to basketball fans?
Not super in-line with your question, but I've started playing Majora's Mask, an n64 game I played as a child but never finished, in the hopes of finally finishing it. I really loved video games a lot as a child, but haven't played them much at all in my adulthood. I also do want to get back to reading more too, something I enjoyed as a child.

I did laugh when, after all that build up, you landed with "I LOVED Ricky Davis." Fun read!

Great!
...** But I often find reasons to complicate my love of a thing when maybe those reasons don’t need to be given attention.** ...
Funny how when we are young it IS simple... and as we age we are always trying to MAKE it simple... but do we?
Oh my goodness! That is one of my top quotes from the piece too! (great minds :)!
This one was a total banger!!!
